Another day, another outrageous Trump tweet. This time, he's decided to wade in on the debate surrounding a video of Covington Catholic High School students harrassing a Native American.
In the viral video, a group of Covington Catholic students wearing Make American Great Again caps can be seen mocking and ridiculing an elderly Native American protester, who is playing his drum and singing at the Indiginous People's March.
The man, Nathan Phillips, was a Vietnam veteran and was at the protest to raise awareness. The students had come to Washington on a field trip for the anti-abortion March for Life rally.
Now, Trump has taken to Twitter to air his thoughts on the video. Obviously, he's effectively calling it 'fake news'.
In a message on his personal account, he wrote:
Looking like Nick Sandman & Covington Catholic students were treated unfairly with early judgements proving out to be false - smeared by media.
Not good, but making big comeback! “New footage shows that media was wrong about teen’s encounter with Native American” @TuckerCarlson
Needless to say, people have been outraged by the president of the United States' take on the viral video.
Some claimed that the MAGA hat is the new KKK robe.
Others didn't hold back in their assessmet that it was obvious the boys were harrassing the elderly man.
While other Twitter users agreed with president Trump's view.
Others were thoroughly shocked.
And claimed Trump was an enabler of 'fascism'.
And called out the fact he appeared 'proud' of the Covington Catholic students, and implied he was 'racist'.
And pointed out that Trump didn't even spell Nick Sandmann's correctly...
Since the video went viral, Nick Sandmann, the Covington Catholic High School student featured front and centre in the video, has issued a statement saying:
I can tell you my experience with Covington Catholic is that students are respectful of all races and cultures. We also support everyone's right to free speech.
However, the New York Post reports that an old video from the school has resurfaced showing students sporting black faces and bodies during a basketball game. The video was posted to the school's YouTube account in 2012, and was titled Colonel Crazies Compilation Video.
In a statement regards the viral video, Covington Catholic High School extended its apologies to Philips:
We extend our deepest apologies to Phillips. This behavior is opposed to the Church's teachings on the dignity and respect of the human person.
