What we think we spend in tax versus what we actually spend in tax

We as a nation are - as ever - wrong. This time, we are wrong about tax. As this graphic from Statista, based on research from YouGov, demonstrates we think our tax contributions are far more evenly distributed than they are in reality.

Note that this graphic is based on the tax breakdown given by the government, which has attracted controversy as it splits 'welfare' into its own distinct spending category. As Full Fact note, their definition of welfare is controversial as it includes not just benefits but also "items like spending on personal social services such as home care and child protection."
