Jeremy Clarkson is on the brink of ending his association with Top Gear and the BBC after a "fracas" with a producer.

After a series of runs-ins with BBC bosses and viewers, Clarkson is thought to have privately despaired about the show having to play it safe to avoid any more high-profile diplomatic incidents.
