Revealed: how Andy Murray psychs himself up

Famously erudite Andy Murray has once again proven why he earned the title of 'Sports Personality of the Year', after a list of his motivational tips were posted on Twitter by Dutch journalist Wilfred Genee.

Inspirational gems on Murray’s list include: “Be good to yourself”, “Try your best” and the possibly Fifty Shades-inspired “Be intense with your legs.”

Genee writes he thinks the list has a message for everyone: never forget basic principles even when you are performing at your peak.

Murray's tips:

  1. Be good to yourself
  2. Try your best
  3. Be intense with your legs
  4. Be proactive during points
  5. Focus on each point and the process
  6. Try to be the one dictating
  7. Try to keep him at the baseline, make him move
  8. Keep going for your serve
  9. Stick to the baseline as much as possible
  10. Stay low on passes and use your legs
