This man sent his mum a cardboard cutout of himself when he was studying abroad and instantly regretted it

Dalton Ross sent a cutout picture of himself to his mother in an effort to ease the pain of separation while he goes away to study for a year in London.

The 22-year-old from Tennessee is studying at Westminster University on his year abroad from Belmont, and explained on Reddit:

Jokingly sent my mom a cutout of myself while I'm studying abroad. She seems to be entertaining herself with it

Dalton later explained to indy100:

After being here a month I just thought if my mom got a package from me that, when opened, was just a giant cutout of me with a goofy face.

I didn't tell her I was sending anything, I just included a note that said 'You're welcome.'

Cue the hilarity...

Dalton playing with the dog...

Dalton enthusiastic at the prospect of food...

Sporty Dalton...

And sleepy Dalton...

And 'family time' Dalton...

Then it got a tad weird...

Just how big is that Barbie doll if his cutout is life-size..?

Until we started to question if he was actually there in real life...

His mother, Susan Talley, took 'quality time' quite literally and wrote on her Facebook page:

While Dalton is enjoying his time traveling the world, we've got a backup one to fill in his spot.

Susan seems to be in the process of creating a photo album, entitled: "Faux Dalton/Backup Dalton/Flat Dalton/Dalton's stunt double."

Dalton explained:

My mom is cool and jokes around pretty often.

One thing she likes to do is funny stunts on roller-coasters so that the on-ride camera will get a shot of her seemingly playing a board game or something similar. I wasn't expecting her to do anything with the cutout though, but she has gone above and beyond with the jokes with that.

Well played mum.
