A bizarre NSFW joke involving puffins brought the internet together on Christmas Day

You're forgiven if you spent yesterday offline connecting IRL with loved ones, what with it being Christmas Day and all.

Betcha didn't think logging on later to catch up would lead to the discovery of the trending hashtag '#wankpuffin':

It appears that the joke was started on Christmas Day evening by Nick Harvey, who contacted BT in faux outrage at randomly-generated wifi codes.

Nick decided to see if #wankpuffin could go the distance and start trending on Twitter.

Sensible questions were asked.

But pretty soon people up and down the country, stuffed from eating too much turkey and now watching Christmas TV, decided to get in on the joke.

Pandora's box had been opened.

And things started to get out of hand.

Very.

Very.

Quickly.

Within the space of two hours, '#wankpuffin' was trending worldwide.

It was a Christmas miracle.

Even if John Prescott was a little disturbed.

It's times like these we are reminded of how much we bloody love both Britain, and the internet.

Anyway. Whether you are one of the culprits behind the great British #wankpuffin off of 2015, or you're just waking up to it now, spare a thought for the poor sods at BT today:
