Stephen Colbert expertly takes down Trump after president said he 'stands with Saudi Arabia'

On Tuesday, Donald Trump issued an official White House statement about the murder of Saudi Arabian journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

The statement which appeared to pardon any suspected involvement that the Saudi Arabian royal family or government might have in the crime was a curious one to say the least.

In it Trump vowed to stand by Saudi Arabia, branded Khashoggi as an 'enemy of the state' and claimed that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman may or may not have known about the killing.

Trump wrote:

Our intelligence agencies continue to assess all information, but it could very well be that the Crown Prince had knowledge of this tragic event ― maybe he did and maybe he didn’t!

Despite this the CIA are preparing a report that connects Khashoggi's death to the Crown Prince, which Stephen Colbert pointed out on the latest edition of The Late Show.

In his opening monologue, which also included a funny takedown of Trump's showing at the annual Thanksgiving turkey pardoning, Colbert mocked Trump's interpretation of the Khashoggi murder by saying:

Did Donald Trump just knowingly provide cover for a murderous autocrat? Maybe he did, and maybe he didn’t.
