The fifth season of The Boys, arrives today (or the first two episodes, we should say) as the satirical superhero series is set to return to our screens for the final time.

The news was first announced at CCXP Brazil in December last year, where series stars, Erin Moriarty, Laz Alonso, Karen Fukuhara, Tomer Capone, and Colby Minifie took to the stage along with showrunner and executive producer Eric Kripke, with over 3,000 fans in attendance at the Thunder Stage.

Discussions on the panel included looking back on the most shocking, fan-favourite moments from the show, followed by a first look at the official teaser for season five.

The Boys is based on The New York Times best-selling comic by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, who also serve as executive producers.

Here is everything we know about the new season:

What can viewers expect?

Prime Video

Fans of the show can expect more action in this epic conclusion.

"In the fifth and final season, it’s Homelander’s world, completely subject to his erratic, egomaniacal whims," according to the plot synopsis.

"Hughie, Mother’s Milk, and Frenchie are imprisoned in a 'Freedom Camp.' Annie struggles to mount a resistance against the overwhelming Supe force. Kimiko is nowhere to be found. But when Butcher reappears, ready and willing to use a virus that will wipe all Supes off the map, he sets in motion a chain of events that will forever change the world and everyone in it."

It added, "It’s the climax, people. Big stuff’s gonna happen."

What are critics saying about the new season?

At the time of writing, The Boys Season 5 has a 97 per cent critics score and an 89 per cent audience score on TV and film review aggregate website, Rotten Tomatoes, and has received favourable reviews from critics - although some say the new series doesn't live up to the highs of previous seasons.

"The fifth season wraps up this bloody comic book story and manages to avoid the pitfalls that so many lacklustre farewells have fallen into in recent years," NME's Victoria Luxford wrote in her five-star review.

Empire's Amon Warmann said in his three-star review, "Though it remains as timely as ever, The Boys’ endgame does take its time putting the pieces in place for the final showdown with Homelander — for both better and worse."

"The Boys' final chapter stays admirably faithful to the characters that have been at the vanguard of this chaos for the past five years," Screen Rant's Craig Elvy noted, giving it an eight out of 10.

The Guardian''s Lucy Mangan wrote in her four-star review, "There are also some not-nice moments, some good lines, much bum- and dick-based humour – all is present and correct. But there are none of the flashes of invention or inspiration that make and have made The Boys great. However, the action comes at you so thick and fast thereafter that it’s easier to overlook the deficiency."

When will the final season be released?

Prime Video

Season Five premieres today (April 8) with two episodes, followed by a new episode each week, culminating in the unforgettable, epic series finale on May 20.

The season will stream exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.
