Trump's response to the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi has left people furious

Donald Trump has said “the world” should be held accountable for the death of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Speaking to US reporters after delivering a Thanksgiving Day message to troops deployed to Afghanistan, one asked the US president: “Who should be held accountable for [Jamal Khashoggi’s murder]?

Trump responded:

Maybe the world should be held accountable because the world is a vicious place. The world is a very vicious place.

He added:

You look at what’s happening in China, you look at what’s happening in so many different countries, I could name many countries. You look at what’s happening in terrorism all over the world.

The other thing about Saudi Arabia, they’re putting up tremendous amounts of money to fight terrorism. Now, they were part of terrorism and nobody is going to try and justify that. They were a big part of it. But they’re spending a lot of money and they’re opening up and they’re doing a lot of things.

The comments come after the US President has made it clear that he will continue to support Saudi Arabia, despite reports that the CIA found the country’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to have ordered the killing of the Washington Post columnist.

He had praised the country for low oil prices and tweeted ‘America First.’ Speaking to reporters earlier this week, Trump said he did not know who was behind the killing, and added that the CIA might never be able to definitively prove who killed the reporter.

His latest comment blaming “the world” has been met with derision.

One Twitter user wrote:

I just keeping nodding my head as my heart sinks lower into my chest. This is the most disgusting human I have encountered in my 65 years on Planet Earth.

Another added: “LOL, now it’s the fault of everyone else except the guy who ordered it, those who did it, and the ones that are covering it while sweeping it under the rug while just saying, “That’s life for you.”

People on social media are appalled by where the US president placed the blame
