Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana are two of the most famous names in fashion, and, for 23 years, were one of the world's most high-profile gay couples.
But now the founders of Dolce & Gabbana have reiterated their opposition to same-sex marriage, and children being raised by gay couples.
In an interview with Italian magazine Panorama they declared: "We oppose gay adoptions. The only family is the traditional one."
Gabbana said: "The family is not a fad. In it there is a supernatural sense of belonging."
Dolce meanwhile said children not born into a traditional family environment are "children of chemistry, synthetic children".
LGBT news Italia has responded to the interview by calling for a boycott of the Dolce & Gabbana brand, and that message has already reached Elton John, who has two sons born through a surrogate with husband David Furnish.
In a post on Instagram, he wrote:
How dare you refer to my beautiful children as 'synthetic'. And shame on you for wagging your judgemental little fingers at IVF - a miracle that has allowed legions of loving people, both straight and gay, to fulfil their dream of having children. Your archaic thinking is out of step with the times, just like your fashions. I shall never wear Dolce and Gabbana ever again. #BoycottDolceGabbana.
