Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has the perfect response to anyone criticising her Met Gala ‘tax the rich’ gown

Last night, the annual Met Gala in New York City was once again host to celebrities and public figures dressed to the nines for the occasion.

Amongst those in attendance was US congresswoman and New Yorker Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who wore a dress with the words “Tax the Rich” in big red letters across the back.

AOC explained in a tweet that her dress was made by fashion designer Aurora James – a black, female immigrant who is sustainably focussed.

She wrote: “The time is now for childcare, healthcare, and climate action for all. Tax the Rich.”

Her dress undoubtedly made a statement and predictably riled up right-wing conservatives who criticised not only her dress but her ‘hypocritical’ attendance at the event.

AOC is part of the Democratic Socialists of America and was vilified online as a “champagne socialist” for going to the Met Gala.

Republican Lieutenant Governor of Florida, Jeanette Núñez, wrote: “Only in America where a self-described Democratic socialist can wear a $10k ‘tax the rich’ dress, pay $30K for a ticket, and be praised as a champion for the poor. Champagne socialists like AOC are far removed from reality.”

Controversial conservative political commentator Benny Johnson, said: “COST OF A TICKET TO THE MET GALA: $30,000

COST OF A FULL TABLE AT THE MET GALA: $275,000

COST OF A DESIGNER DRESS: $1,000

AOC THINKING SHE “OWNED” ANYONE HERE BUT HERSELF: *PRICELESS*.”

The congresswoman clearly anticipated the backlash and had the perfect response for anyone who was going to criticise her.

In a tweet, AOC wrote: “And before haters get wild flying off the handle, New York elected officials are routinely invited to and attend the Met due to our responsibilities in overseeing and supporting the city’s cultural institutions for the public.

“I was one of several in attendance this evening.”

She also explained on Instagram that her Brother Vellies dress, designed by James, was borrowed.

In contrast to the criticism, others online praised AOC for making that statement at an event packed full of rich people and celebrities.
