Watch a British man trying to explain the NHS to an astonished AOC

The differences between US and UK healthcare are glaring.

Basically, getting sick in the UK doesn’t – for the most part – leave people wildly out of pocket.

While there are a few exceptions, the NHS is supposed to be free at the point of use.

In the US, however, there's a complicated insurance system that can see people rack up hospital bills well into the hundreds simply for having to ride in an ambulance.

So explaining to an American citizen about what it’s like to have free healthcare is a little like talking to a Victorian about all these cool mini computers we now run our entire lives from.

As one British man found out when he had the task of telling Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez about the experience of using the NHS.

The discussion took place while the pair were on a Twitch livestream, playing the game Among Us.

AOC put together the stream as part of a voting drive and discussed election-related topics with the gamers she chose to take part – one of whom was British gamer Harris Brewis, who plays under the handle ‘Hbomberguy’.

And at one point, the two began discussing healthcare, with AOC curious about just how the system worked in the UK.

“So you go to the doctor and then what happens?” asked AOC.

“Do you just walk up and say ‘I need help’? I can’t even imagine that interaction without a credit card or some sort of cash payment”.

Brewis quickly laid it out, saying:

You go to the doctor and you say ‘I have this problem’.

They prescribe you the medicine and you just go pick it up.

That’s it.

Then you go home and Google how much it would have cost in America.

And that’s how you get radicalised.

AOC’s reaction drove home just how inaccessible healthcare in the US can get.

Watchers of the stream outside the US were shocked.

While those living under the system chimed in with their own horror stories.

People thanked their lucky stars for the NHS.

And many started envisaging a new future…

The future is in your hands, America.
