Melania Trump closed out the second night of the RNC on Tuesday evening with a speech offering sympathy on coronavirus and and made pleas for racial harmony in the country.
The first lady, who usually stays out of the spotlight, delivered Tuesday evening's keynote address before a small audience, including her husband, in the Rose Garden of the White House.
In her speech, she praised her husband as a someone who "makes no secrets about how he feels about things".
"Total honesty is what we as citizens deserve from our president. Whether you like it or not you always know what he's thinking."
While her Tuesday night speech was fairly even-keeled, Melania has said some eccentric things in the past. Here are some of the most memorable...
1. When she insisted she does it "herself"
I don’t have a nanny. I have a chef, and I have my assistant, and that’s it. I do it myself.
Speaking with Harper’s Bazaar in 2016, Melania talked about parenting her then 10-year-old son Barron, making clear that she doesn’t need a nanny. (Although sounds like she might have a bit more help compared to the average mother).
2. When she thought staying in a normal hotel was a novelty.
It was kind of a fun experience. We stayed in a hotel. It was clean. It was, I think, a Holiday Inn… It’s funny when we go and travel. They don’t have five-star hotels there, but you go with it.
In a DuJour interview the now First Lady discussed her travels to Iowa with her husband on the campaign trail, and she seemed to forget the vast majority of the electorate does not regularly stay in five-star hotels.
Likely Melania was more used to the “30,000-square-foot triplex at the top of Trump tower on Fifth Avenue” where they lived at the time, as the article points out.
3. When she said her husband "supports women".
He supports everybody. He supports women. He encourages them to go to the highest level, to achieve the dreams. He employs many, many women.
Speaking in an interview with Anderson Cooper in October 2016, it does make sense Melania would feel compelled to support the man she is married to. But considering even just his record of how he speaks to and about women, the sexual harassment claims made against him and where he “grabs them”, this is a hilarious claim.
4. When she tried to deflect blame from Trump's "grab em by the pussy" moment.
You can see from the tape, the cameras were not on—it was only a mic. And I wonder if they even knew that the mic was on. Because they were kind of, ah, boy talk. And he was led on. Like egg on from the host to say, uh, dirty and bad stuff.
Related to the quote above about women, Melania discusses Trump’s infamous ‘Access Hollywood’ “grab ‘em by the pussy” line, brushing it off that her husband was merely being “egged on” and had no responsibility for what he was saying.
5. Her strange views on languages.
My opinion is that more languages you speak, better it is, but when you come to America, you speak English.
Yikes! In a “nation of Immigrants” this is certainly quite ridiculous. Not to mention, the USA does not even have an official language.
(English was not Melania’s first language, as she was born in Slovenia and reportedly speaks five languages).
6. When she demanded to see Obama's birth certificate
“Do you want to see President Obama birth certificate or not?”
This speaks for itself. In a 2011 interview with Joy Behar, Melania revealed herself as pushing the racist, unfounded birther conspiracy against former president Obama.
7. That Michelle Obama speech moment
My parents impressed on me the values that you work hard for what you want in life; that your word is your bond and you do what you say and keep your promise.
This section of a Melania speech from the 2016 RNC definitely not ridiculous on its face, but here is what Michelle Obama said in her 2008 convention speech:
“And Barack and I were raised with so many of the same values: that you work hard for what you want in life; that your word is your bond and you do what you say you're going to do.”
At the time, #FamousMelaniaTrumpQuotes trended mercilessly, with people dragging her for plagiarising the Michelle's speech and pretending she had originally said every famous line throughout history.
So it looks like some of her best quotes, Melania didn't even say herself...
