Ilhan Omar has been a US citizen longer than Melania Trump

Calls for Donald Trump to be impeached are intensifying after he has been accused of racism following a string of tweets widely believed to be about four congresswomen of colour - Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Pressley and Rashida Tlaib.

Political commentators are also pointing out something else. CNN’s Jake Tapper said Omar has been a US citizen “longer than the first lady,” Melania Trump.

Omar is the only congresswoman to have been born outside of the US in Mogadishu, Somalia and she moved to America in 1992 and became a US citizen in the year 2000.

Meanwhile, Melania Trump became a US citizen in 2006 at the age of 36, one year after she married the then property magnate.

In light of Trump’s attack on Omar and the other congresswomen, people are sharing this “fun fact” online

After the four congresswomen called a press conference condemning Trump’s comments, he doubled down.

“We will never be a Socialist or Communist Country. IF YOU ARE NOT HAPPY HERE, YOU CAN LEAVE!” the president ranted, repeating his accusation that the quartet are “anti-Israel, pro Al-Qaeda” after telling the press he does not mind his views reflecting those of neo-Nazis: “It doesn’t concern me because many people agree with me.”
