Warning: This article contains spoilers for Game of Thrones season 8
Emilia Clarke has revealed she was worried Beyoncé would dislike her after her character Daenerys Targaryen took a dark turn in Game of Thrones' final season.
In an interview with The New Yorker, Clarke spoke about meeting Beyoncé at an Oscars after party before the start of season 8.
Despite being excited about meeting one of her idols, she said she couldn't stop thinking about the twist that was coming in the show's final episodes.
Clarke said:
Beyoncé says to me, ‘Oh, my goodness, it’s so wonderful to meet you. I think you’re brilliant.’ I just couldn’t handle it! I was on the verge of tears…
All I wanted to scream was ‘Please, please still like me even though my character turns into a mass-killing dictator! Please still think that I’m representing women in a really fabulous way’...
I was just, like, Oh, my God, my absolute idol in life is saying that she likes me, and I know for a fact that by the end of this season she’s going to hate me.
Daenerys' plot-line in the final season - in which she became the “mad queen” some people feared she could be - didn’t just catch fans by surprise, it caught Clarke off guard as well.
In fact, she was so surprised by the twist that she rang her mum because she was scared people would hate her character…
She told Entertainment Weeklyhow she reacted when she read the final scripts.
I genuinely did this, and it’s embarrassing and I’m going to admit it to you.
I called my mom and—“Clarke shifts into a tearful voice to perform the conversation as she reenacts the call: 'I read the scripts and I don’t want to tell you what happens but can you just talk me off this ledge? It really messed me up.’
And then I asked my mom and brother really weird questions. They were like: ‘What are you asking us this for? What do you mean do I think Daenerys is a good person? Why are you asking us that question? Why do you care what people think of Daenerys? Are you okay?’
And I’m all: ‘I’m fine! … But is there anything Daenerys could do that would make you hate her?’
It’s clear now why Clarke didn’t seem very happy with the ending of the show.
But despite everything Daenerys did – such as killing thousands of innocent people and becoming a tyrant… - some people were still backing her character.
And people were full of praise for Clarke's performance this season.
So she can sleep easy knowing that Beyoncé probably doesn’t hate her.
