A Trump-supporting conspiracy theorist may have just accidentally invented the concept of vaccination.

Jack Posobiec, a prominent alt-right internet troll, tweeted:

“What if instead of a vaccine we were just able to get exposed to a weak version of the virus that enabled us to build the antibodies we need to fight the real thing.”

As most people are aware, that’s – in simplified terms – exactly how vaccines work.

While the majority of people have welcomed the news that a number of coronavirus vaccines have been successfully developed, including the Pfzier-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines which the US’s medical regulator have approved, a small faction of anti-vaxxers have spread misinformation about them online.

A common anti-vaxx claim is that natural remedies can be used to combat coronavirus instead: Posobiec’s tweet echoes other suggestions for vaccine ‘alternatives’.

People responded to Posobiec’s tweet with ironic ‘suggestions’ of their own.

They also debated whether or not Posobiec was serious.

Posobiec, who is no stranger to trolling, claimed he was joking in a separate tweet.

If that’s the case, we can’t say it’s particularly original: an almost identical post appeared on Facebook months ago.
