Finally an excuse to spend more time with your pets. If you even needed one.

It turns out that letting your pets snooze in your bed is good for you.

Yep, along with exercise and eating healthily, we should also nap with our dogs more.

New research from the Mayo Clinic in Arizona tracked the sleep of 40 adults - and their dogs - over five months.

They found that letting dogs sleep in your bedroom helps you get a better night's sleep, regardless of breed.

Unfortunately, cuddling up with them under the covers does not do the same to improve your rest. After all, a doggy dream about running is bound to jerk you awake.

But you can always let them snooze at the foot of your bed or on a nearby pillow.

Author of the study Dr Lois Kran said:

Many pet owners are away from their pets for much of the day.

So they want to maximise their time with them when they are home.

Having them in the bedroom at night is an easy way to do that.

He added:

Most people assuming having pets in the bedroom is a disruption

We found that many people actually find comfort and a sense of security from sleeping with their pets.

The relationship between people and their pets has change over time, which is likely why many people in fact do sleep with their pets in the bedroom.

And, now, pet owners find comfort knowing it won't negatively impact their sleep.

So stop the nightly battle with your puppy to get it to settle in the back.

Both of you will sleep far better in the same room.
