27 of the most furious and hilarious reactions to Dominic Cummings 'breaking lockdown' by travelling hundreds of miles

It’s been an eventful 24 hours in the life of Boris Johnson’s adviser Dominic Cummings.

A joint investigation by the Guardian and the Mirroralleges that police spoke to Cummings about breaching the government’s lockdown rules after he was seen in Durham, 264 miles from his London home, staying with his parents. This is despite the fact that he was self-isolating having had symptoms of coronavirus. The investigation claims that officers approached Cummings days after he was seen running out of Downing Street when the prime minister tested positive for the virus at the end of March.

Well, well well…

In response, “source” close to Cummings says that he wasn’t spoken to by police. But a spokesman for Durham Constabulary said: “On Tuesday, March 31, our officers were made aware of reports that an individual had travelled from London to Durham and was present at an address in the city. Officers made contact with the owners of that address who confirmed that the individual in question was present and was self-isolating in part of the house." So if they didn't speak to Cummings, they presumably spoke to his parents, who own the home.

The “source” also said he didn’t break the rules because his parents were helping with childcare. But the government’s guidance states: “You should not be visiting family members who do not live in your home. The only exception is if they need help, such as having shopping or medication dropped off.”

Cummings was also reportedly seen loudly dancing to ABBA in his garden, which has cast doubts over whether he was too ill to look after his children. He was also sighted with a young boy, presumably his son, at his parents gate five days after being spoken to by police, according to the report.

Obviously the fact that Cummings is being accused of breaking lockdown rules has caused a lot of drama online.

He’s a polarising figure at the best of times, but it seems fairly outrageous that the man advising the PM could have behaved this way.

Given that medical advisers in Scotland and England (Catherine Calderwood and Neil Ferguson) were forced to resign after being caught breaching lockdown rules, there’s a huge number of calls for Cummings’ resignation.

Politicians from across the political spectrum condemned the supposed rule break…

As did journalists of all political persuasions, from arch Brexiteers Tim Montgomerie and Julia Hartley-Brewer to socialists like Owen Jones.

People were really angry. Like, furious.

And then there were jokes and memes. Lots and lots of memes.

In response, Cummings has said he's not remotely bothered and thinks it's all fake news. Though we're not sure that excuse is going to cut it.
