An Edinburgh meme that rivalled Distracted Boyfriend had the internet in a flurry.

The photo features a less-than-enthused looking woman and a man shouting into her ear at a club.

People took to Twitter to caption the ‘relatable’ image, and it's been pretty funny

No topic was left untouched, and people used the meme to make everything from political statements to jokey comments...

It turns out, the two people in the photo are actually friends.

The boy in the photograph is called Patrick Richie, and the girl is Lucia Gorman. They were out in Milk, Edinburgh, dancing the night away.

Speaking to Radio 1 Newsbeat, Richie joked:

That doesn’t look good for me, does it?

The truth of the matter is, the pair were at school together and hadn’t seen each other for a while. Lucie admits she didn’t remember what he said, but that she ‘definitely wasn’t having any of it.’

I feel like it was probably the end of the night and I was definitely ready for my bed.

I probably just thought, 'I'll nod at anything at this point'.

They hadn’t known that the photo existed – let alone that it would reach viral status.

It was taken by David Wilkinson, who was at the club with Love Island’s Jack Fowler for an event. Talk about degrees of separation.

'When I took the picture, it was just a quick snap before I left to go home', he tells Newsbeat.

The day that it blew up it was my birthday, but I actually got more messages about the picture than I did about my birthday so it was quite weird.

No harm, no fowl however. Lucie’ grandparents have even seen the photo, and she finds the whole thing hilarious.

'It's all pretty funny to be honest,’ she said.

'I'm sure it'll all be fine,’ Patrick added.
