Ellen Pompeo shows the world what it means to be a good ally for people of colour, and the reaction has been incredible

Grey’s Anatomy actress Ellen Pompeo has won hearts and minds after she appeared on Net-A-Porter and talked about the lack of inclusivity on sets – including on Net-A-Porter.

For the annual Women in Television issue, Porter magazine got four actresses together - Ellen Pompeo, Gabrielle Union, Gina Rodriguez, and Emma Roberts - to talk about women and diversity.

The women talked about sexism in Hollywood, actors of colour and racism – and it’s an incredible 20 minute conversation that everyone needs to watch.

One clip in particular, which sees Pompeo talking about the importance of speaking out against racism as a white person, is being given the viral treatment.

“This day has been incredible, and there’s a ton of women in the room. But I don’t see enough colour,” Pompeo began, talking about the Net-A-Porter set. “I didn’t see enough colour when I walked in the room today.”

I had a meeting with a director of another endorsement project that I’m doing where I said, ‘You know, when I show up on set, I would like to see the crew look like the world that I walk around in every day.'

I think it’s up to all productions to make sure that your crew looks like the world we see. As Caucasian people, it’s our job. It’s our task. It’s our responsibility to make sure we speak up in every single room we walk into [and say] this is not OK and that we can all do better. It’s our job. We’ve created the problem.
