The most played songs on Spotify have been crunched and the results are in.

Until recently it has been very hard to tell the current popularity of older songs, as charts and album sales only provide us with information on its popularity at release.

However, Spotify and its 75million-strong user base allows us to access information on popularity – including the staying power of some older hits.

The people at Polygraph have done exactly that.

There are some limitations to their findings – for instance Spotify’s presence is greater in the UK and USA than it is, for example, in China and Russia.

Users are also predominately in their 20s, which does skew the popularity of certain songs.

Regardless, the top 20 songs older than a decade, by playcount, are as follows:

Some songs achieve commercial success early and some are slow burners – the issue with hitting omnipresent status in a short amount of time is that a song becomes victim of listener fatigue.

One such example is Daft Punks’s “Get Lucky” which initially dominated playcounts in mid-2013 on release, but has since been overtaken on a month by month basis by “Do I Wanna Know” by the Arctic Monkeys, a song which had a much more modest release around the same time.
