US president Donald Trump has taken to Twitter in order to demand that Sweden 'give A$AP Rocky his freedom', in a series of tweets sent out on Thursday.

The musician, whose real name is Rakim Myers, has been charged with assault for causing actual bodily harm in Stockholm, and will remain in custody until a trial takes place, reports the BBC.

On Twitter, Mr Trump raged that Sweden had:

Let our African American Community down

The rapper was arrested on July 3 after a fight was captured on video, and the two other men who were with them were charged with assault.

In a tweet, the president wrote:

Give A$AP Rocky his FREEDOM. We do so much for Sweden but it doesn’t seem to work the other way around. Sweden should focus on its real crime problem!

He then added:

Very disappointed in Prime Minister Stefan Löfven for being unable to act. Sweden has let our African American Community down in the United States. I watched the tapes of A$AP Rocky, and he was being followed and harassed by troublemakers. Treat Americans fairly!

A spokesperson for Stefan Lofvren said that the Sweidsh judicial system, prosecutors and courts were independent, and that:

Everyone is equal before the law.

Daniel Suneson, the Swedish prosecutor in charge of the case, added that there was:

An obvious risk that these three suspects would leave the country if they were released.

On Wednesday, the rapper's mother pleaded for the release of her son, telling a Swedish newspaper that A$AP:

Isn't really eating properly.

Other celebrities such as Kim Kardashian West and Kanye West have also called for A$AP's release, reports the BBC.

The trail is due on July 30.
