On Wednesday morning, United States President Donald Trump tweeted that transgender people would not be allowed to serve in the United States' military.

The tweets alarmed many who took issue with the regressive policy move. A common criticism was that the policy was ideologically driven rather than an evidence-based cost decision.

For example, the Washington Post reported that the US Military currently spends five times as much on Viagra as the medical costs of transgender medical care would be.

The ACLU has said it is considering a legal challenge to the proposed ban and there are around 15,000 transgender troops in the military whose futures remain unclear at this point.

BuzzFeed News reported:

At the Pentagon, the first of the three tweets raised fears that the president was getting ready to announce strikes on North Korea or some other military action.

Many said they were left in suspense for nine minutes, the time between the first and second tweet.

Only after the second tweet did military officials receive the news the president was announcing a personnel change on Twitter.

Which isn't at all alarming.

George Takei was one of a number of prominent LGBT celebrities to denounce Trump's decision on Twitter, but his rant was perhaps the most charged:

Don't cross Mr Sulu. Ever.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters on Wednesday that the White House are yet to decide upon details on how to implement the change and offered no specifics or timeline as to how it would be achieved or how it would affect transgender troops currently serving.
