Hugh Hefner's final messages reveal a different side to the ultimate Playboy

The original Playboy Hugh Hefner has died, aged 91, surrounded by loved ones at the Playboy Mansion.

Hefner is vilified by some, beloved by others, but his final message from Twitter was one of compassion, with which many would struggle to disagree.

He was not a prolific tweeter, and his last posts were between 14-19 September in the midst of Hurricane Irma.

The hurricane officially dissipated on the 16th, and three days later Hefner asked for donations to the One America Appeal, a fund for survivors of the devastating natural disasters.

This was his final tweet, and it is another example of the philanthropy that Hefner engaged in throughout his life.

Using his Playboy empire, Hefner founded the Hugh M. Hefner Foundation in 1964, with the aim of facilitating 'individual rights in a democratic society'. The fund provides grants to applicants between $5,000 and $10,000 USD.

Hefner also supported and donated to Children of the Night, a charity dedicated to rescuing children from prostitution.

A proponent of free speech, Hefner has also granted funds to groups such as the Student Press Law Center and the ACLU Foundation of Southern California.

Hefner also launched a Rational Sex and Drug and Policy program, which aims to 'advance a society where drug policies are grounded in science, compassion, health and human rights which promotes the sovereignty of individuals over their minds and bodies'.
