On Monday, president of the United States Donald Trump reiterated his denial of rape allegations by E Jean Carroll by saying that the journalist and advice columnist was 'not his type'. Yes, really.

Speaking to The Hill on Monday, the president said:

I’ll say it with great respect: No. 1, she’s not my type. No. 2, it never happened. It never happened, OK?

In previous interviews, Mr Trump has suggested that he had never met the author until it emerged that the two of them have been pictured together. In the interview with The Hill, he added:

I know nothing about this woman. I know nothing about her. She is — it’s just a terrible thing that people can make statements like that.

Carroll appeared on CNN on Monday to provide further details of the alleged mid-1990s incident, in which she said Mr Trump cornered her in a dressing room, forced her against a wall, and raped her.

Speaking to CNN, she said:

He pulled down my tights, and it was a fight.

I fought. It was over very quickly, and it was against my will, 100 per cent. I fought and then I ran away.

During the 2016 presidential election, more than a dozen women came forward and accused Trump of sexual misconduct in previous years. Mr Trump has denied all the allegations and said that the women are lying.

It's also not the first instance of the president using the 'not my type' defence to disparage an accuser. In 2016 a former magazine writer accused Mr Trump of assaulting her in 2005, and in response, he said:

She lies! Look at her, I don’t think so.

It goes without saying that people on social media were outraged by the comments.

Some pointed out that Trump had definitely met the journalist in 1987.

Others were simply shocked by his supposed defence.

And that the comments were 'astounding'.

And that the comments are completely 'disgusting'.

And that this is the second time he's used this defence.

Others called it 'outrageous'.

And some just praised Carroll's 'courage' in coming forward with her story.

As well as questioning why Trump isn't being held accountable.

Some questioned why Ivanka appears to have not commented on the allegations.
