Wednesday proved to be a dramatic day in US politics.
The midterm elections saw the Democrats reclaim the House of Representatives from the Republicans, which was a catalyst for a string of startling decisions from Donald Trump.
In a press conference at the White House, Trump discussed his own impeachment with journalists, leading a bad-tempered confrontation with CNN's Jim Acosta.
Shortly after that, Attorney General Jeff Sessions resigned at the request of the president, with 71-year-old handing his resignation to Chief of Staff John Kelly.
In the letter, Sessions confirmed that Trump had asked him to resign from the position and thanked him for allowing him to be a part of his campaign.
I have been honoured to serve as Attorney General and have worked to implement the law enforcement agenda based on the rule of law that formed a central part of your campaign for the presidency.
Trump later thanked Sessions for his contribution to his administration and announced that Matthew G. Whitaker will be serving as the Acting Attorney General
Sessions' timely departure could have huge implications on Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Trump's links with Russia.
Although we will have to wait and see how that plays out, Twitter managed a have a bit of fun with this otherwise serious story.
Throughout his entire political career, which dates back to his time as a senator from Alabama, Session's appearance has been compared to a jolly little elf with rosy cheeks who bakes cookies.
As he was back in the news, Twitter unleashed the jokes and memes on Sessions and it was quite a sight to behold.
It could be that he is Dobby the House Elf from Harry Potter and is now free to leave.
His history of racist remarks was also brought up.
Others were hardly surprised at the news.
