How Machiavellian are you? Take the test

Ever find your favourite characters in books and films are the antiheroes - Frank Underwood, Tony Soprano, pretty much everyone in Game of Thrones? Maybe it's because you've got a streak of bad guy yourself.

Psychologists recently decided that the five traditional dimensions we use to measure personality - agreeableness, extroversion, neuroticism, conscientiousness and openness to new experiences – were missing the crucial factor which determines how selfish we are.

Enter the Hexaco Personality Inventory, a 15-minute test designed to figure out where a person falls on the honesty-humility spectrum.

A study from Carnegie-Mellon University in the US showed the lower a person's score, the more likely they are to cheat in lab tests with a dice rolling game.

"These are people who lack moral character," the leader of the study, Tanya Cohen, told the New Scientist.

The previous "agreeableness" dimension went some way towards figuring out how sly, greedy and dishonest people are, but only in situations we are reacting to, rather than ones we initiate.

"Agreeableness captures people's patience and forgiveness but not the actively harmful behaviours. Honesty-humility really captures that Machiavellianness," she said.
