A man was rushed to hospital in North Philadelphia after a suspected firebomb was thrown into his car while he was sat inside.
The suspect is reported to have shouted: "There you go, Muslim", before launching the explosive at approximately 5am on Thursday.
The victim in his 40s suffered burns to his hands, arms and back but is thought to be in a stable condition, according to police.
"Heard a huge explosion. Didn't know what it was. Then heard a man yelling saying his skin was burning," eyewitness @FeministaJones wrote on Twitter.
"Most of us know him too because he is always on the block working on his car and other things. This is wild."
Many also took to social media to voice criticism that the incident had not been labelled a terrorist attack.
Some claimed the bombing would have received widespread media attention had the suspect been Muslim, citing Islamophobia as the reason for the double standards.
