Martin Luther King's daughter says weatherman who used racial slur should get second chance

Civil rights pioneer Martin Luther King Jr.’s daughter has spoken out in support of a meteorologist who used a racial slur while saying her dad’s name.

Dr Bernice King told TMZ that rather than getting fired, Jeremy Kappell, of WHEC-TV, should have been retrained, or demoted, before being given a second chance.

She said:

I believe that when these racial slurs occur, unless there’s a situation where it’s continual, that people need an opportunity to be rehabilitated and we don’t focus a lot on rehabilitation in our society today.

Kappell was fired by NBC this week for referring to a park named in memory of the civil rights legend as “Martin Luther C–n King Jr. Park” — in what he describes as an accidental “verbal slip”.

He says:

I spoke a little too fast when I was referencing Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. — so fast to the point where I jumbled a couple of words.

Well-known weather forecaster Al Roker also sent similar words of support to Kappell this week, tweeting:
