The important message behind the women who are 'shouting their abortion'

Women are sharing stories of their abortions in a bid to open up the dialogue around the pro-choice movement in the US.

And, to remind us a woman's body is hers to do as she chooses.

As Republicans in the House of Representatives push forward with their efforts to block the flow of government funding to Planned Parenthood clinics, women in America, and across the world, are fighting back with #ShoutYourAbortion.

The campaign was kicked off by writers Amelia Bonow and Lindy West who want to rid the issue of shame and censorship.

In a Facebook post, later shared by West on Twitter, Bonow wrote:

The narrative of those working to defund Planned Parenthood relies on the assumption that abortion is still something to be whispered about.

Having an abortions made me happy... Why wouldn't I be happy that I was not forced to become a mother?

Her words are a reminder of the stigma still attached to family planning and termination in the US.

The pair are now encouraging others to break their silence, and talk openly and honestly about their right to choose, even as they continue to attract criticism online.
