Donald Trump’s ban from Twitter has sent shockwaves across the world as possibly the president’s biggest tool for speaking to the entire world has been taken away from him.

Twitter pulled the plug on Trump’s account on Friday after the violent riot in Washington DC, instigated by thousands of his supporters, which left five dead. Twitter claimed that they made the move to prevent any further incitement of violence. Numerous other social media apps and websites have also moved to restrict the messaging of Trump and his supporters.

Of course, the move has been greeted with apathy by his most loyal of followers but perhaps the person who has taken it the worst is his eldest son Donald Trump Jr, who in the absence of his father has taken to having his own meltdown on Twitter.

Late on Friday, Trump Jr went on a furious rant about his father’s ban and for some reason started to compare his father’s track record to that of the Iranian Ayatollah, Ali Khamenei and 'other dictatorial regimes who are “threatening genocide to entire countries and killing homosexuals.”

Although no one is likely to defend Khamenei’s record on human rights he hasn’t used Twitter to incite violence, which is the key difference here. That being said, Khamenei’s Twitter has been censored in recent days after he spread conspiracy theories about the Covid-19 vaccine.

With this in mind, Trump Jr’s ill-advised comparison perhaps wasn’t the wisest thing that he’s ever done on social media as people were quick to point out the obvious.

In other rants Trump Jr has compared the ban to 1984,  complained about Khamenei having an account in Italian, asked people to sign up to his website in case he gets banned too and retweeted actor Rob Schneider who compared the censoring of Trump voices to the burning of the Reichstag building.
