Marvel fans delighted after Nia DaCosta named as Captain Marvel 2 director | indy100 | indy100

Marvel fans are celebrating after it was confirmed that Nia DaCosta will be the director of Captain Marvel 2, making her the first Black woman to direct a film from the studio.

DaCosta, who made the forthcoming and highly anticipated remake of the classic horror movie Candyman, has landed the role to direct the sequel to the blockbuster success that was Marvel's first woman-fronted superhero film, as reported by Deadline.

Captain Marvel, starring Brie Larson, was released in 2019 grossed $1.128bn and was directed by Ryan Fleck and Anna Bodn, the latter of which was the first woman to direct a Marvel movie, albeit as a co-director.

Larson is due to return for the film which doesn't have a release date at the time of writing but it marks another bold move to have a more diverse set of talents behind the cameras in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. DaCosta joins the likes of Cate Shortland and Chloe Zhao as filmmakers the studio has recently recruited, who will be directing Black Widow and The Eternals respectively.

Neither Disney nor Marvel have commented on the news of DaCosta working on the next Captain Marvel film has been greeted with a large amount of enthusiasm from fans of the franchise as well as filmmakers and actors alike.

The superhero genre is beginning to see more woman POC directors get big jobs. This year alone has seen films by Cathy Yan (Birds of Prey) and Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Old Guard) release movies to critical acclaim, while Ava DuVernay will helm DC's The New Gods.

There is no set release date for Captain Marvel 2 but the entire schedule for the MCU has been severely disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic. The aforementioned Black Widow was due to be released in May but has now been pushed back to an October release in the UK, which has now pushed its entire 'Phase 4' set of films back further.
