Tom Hanks’ son Chet has laid out some rules and regulations for taking part in his self-proclaimed “white boy summer” this year.
The actor prompted ridicule on social media earlier this week after declaring that summer 2021 would be a time for white boys, with an apparent reference to 2019’s “hot girl summer” meme.
“I’m not talking about Trump, NASCAR-type white,” Hanks said in a video on Saturday. “I’m talking about, you know, me, Jon B [R&B singer], Jack Harlow [rapper] type white boy summer.
“Let me know if you guys can vibe with that and get ready, because I am.”

The claim appeared to be tongue-in-cheek - much like Hanks’ controversial use of Jamaican patios - but it caught a lot of attention on social media, sparking some polarising reactions.

Now, in light of that attention, Hanks has decided to flesh out his vision by laying out some more criteria for how to partake in the white boy summer.
His rules are:
- No plaid shirts or Ralph Lauren - it’s a simple black or white t-shirt only.
- No boat shoes (particularly Sperry Top-Siders) - participants in the white boy summer must wear Vans, “chucks” (Converses) or Nike Jordans.
- No calling girls “smokeshows” - we hope this means Chet is banning catcalling completely but to be honest, it’s not clear.
- No salmon-coloured clothing - “don’t ever wear that again!”

In a later Instagram update, Hanks also added some extra rules, including a ban on cargo shorts and an important reminder on etiquette...
He said:
“This is really really important guys, as we get closer to summer and it gets hotter out and there are pool parties and barbecues… white boys, it is not white boy summer to get all drunk and sweaty and sunburnt, booze breath, and going up to people that you barely f****** know getting all in their personal space.
“It doesn’t matter if it’s a dude that you think is now your best friend or a girl that you’re trying to hit on… we’ve gotta stop that s***, we’ve gotta do better!”
However, Chet has made it very clear that one item of clothing that won’t be banned is backwards hats.
“Someone put forward the proposition that we ban all backwards hats. I shut that s*** down real quick,” Hanks told his Instagram followers.
“Backwards hats are and will remain good.”
Wise advice from the man, I’m sure we can all agree…
