You might have been pronouncing Nutella the wrong way this whole time

Nutella has long been known as the UK’s hazelnut chocolate spread of choice, and indeed the world’s. However, it appears we may have been pronouncing its name wrong the whole time.

A Twitter investigation into the issue began after a comedian tweeted an overheard snippet of conversation, sparking debate.

Subsequently, BuzzFeed’s Tom Chivers looked into the matter, finding the official pronunciation on the Ferrero website:

It turns out the official pronunciation is “new-tell-uh” not “nuh-tell-uh” as we’re sure most of you use.

Unsurprisingly, many were unhappy with this verdict, so BuzzFeedsubsequently contacted Ferrero for a clarification. The company said it does not wish to force any universal pronunciation.

A spokesperson said:

In the UK we call it and pronounce it ‘Nutella’ as do consumers. The US pronunciation is just for them.

So the conclusion is because the UK appears to have adopted “nuh-tell-uh” we can get away with it, but those stateside are stuck with an enforced “new-tell-uh”?

What a monstrous new world we live in.
