Winston Churchill’s grandson summed up Boris Johnson’s Brexit nightmare with one perfect joke

Sir Nicholas Soames, the grandson of Winston Churchill, who was removed from the Tory whip earlier this week after defying the government has delivered a scathing speech aimed straight at Boris Johnson's cabinet.

Soames, who has been a Tory MP for 37 years did not hold anything back when he addressed the Commons on Wednesday, less than 24 hours after being removed from the Tory party for voting down Johnson's no-deal legislation.

The 71-year-old, who will not be standing in the next General Election, started his speech by stating he supported Brexit and had consistently voted in favour of Theresa May's much-maligned withdrawal deal.

Whilst doing this he also delivered a brutal, yet still, eloquent joke aimed firmly at the Cabinet who he branded as disloyal.

I want to make clear that I have always believed that the referendum result must be honoured, and indeed I have voted for the withdrawal agreement on every occasion that it has been presented to the house.

Which is more than can be said for my right-honourable friend the Prime Minister, the Leader of the House and other members of the Cabinet whose serial disloyalty has been an inspiration for so many of us.

Soames emotionally added that he was sad to see his time in parliament end in such a manner and hoped that the Commons could 'rediscover the spirit of compromise, humility and understanding.'

I am not standing at the next election and I am thus approaching the end of 37 years' service to this House, of which I have been proud and am honoured beyond words to have been a member.

I am truly very sad that it should end in this way.

I hope this House can rediscover the spirit of compromise, humility and understanding that will enable us finally to push ahead with the vital work in the interest of the whole country which has inevitably had to be so sadly neglected whilst we get on with Brexit.

Shortly after Soames made his speech, it began to be shared on social media, with many people praising his words and also enjoying his takedown of the Cabinet.

Soames is amongst 21 Tories who defied the government and subsequently had the whip removed, including Kenneth Clarke, Philip Hammond, David Guake, Oliver Letwin, Justine Greening and Dominic Grieve.
