YouTube executive who called police on black man standing outside apartment denies being racist

A YouTube executive who called the police on a black man waiting for his friend inside of their apartment building insists he isn’t racist.

Christopher Cukor released a statement on Medium and said he would never contribute to a “pattern” of white people calling the police on black people.

“Unfortunately there is a terrible pattern of people calling the authorities regarding people of colour for no other reason than their race,” he said.

The last thing I ever intended was to echo that history.

Cukor went viral after a video of him made its way on the internet. In the clip, he called the police on Wesley Michel, who recorded the event.

Cukor asked Wesley, a software engineer, to call the friend he was meeting from the security callbox and, when he refused, Cukor called the police.

Wesley, a software engineer, told Cukor multiple times to stop calling the police and he’ll stop recording the video, which Cukor declined to do.

“Like many in San Francisco, I live in a building with a security callbox and residents in the building count on that security measure,” Cukor explained in his post.

I noticed Wesley Michel caught the door and entered the building without using the callbox. I did what came naturally and asked where he was going. I want to be clear on this point, this is something I do regularly, regardless of who the other person is.

As I learned later, Wesley was a friend of a guest of a resident in the building. The building resident was not expecting Wesley. When the encounter turned confrontational and I couldn’t resolve it myself, I called the police. Here’s where the complexity begins.

In the video Cukor’s son told him not to call the police, but that fell on deaf ears.

Cukor goes on to say in the post that his reaction comes from a “unique” position.

“My father was murdered outside his home by a trespasser who he confronted alone,” he said.

For my child’s safety, my safety and that of the building, I felt it was necessary to get help in this situation. Furthermore, I’ve encountered trespassers in my building and we’ve been robbed several times. This is not uncommon in San Francisco and the bad actors are all different colors. I now realize that Wesley was reacting based on his unique history as well…I’m sorry my actions caused Wesley to feel unfairly targeted due to his race.
