It's no secret that Hollywood has a penchant for May-December relationships, and a new analysis of top actors' careers has revealed the extent of it.

Researchers at Graphjoy charted the movie careers of 20 top male actors in Hollywood between the years of 1980 and 2015, looking at more than 400 films.

They then compared their ages at the time of filming with the women who played their romantic interests - and found that, after male actors turn 35, in approximately half of their films they are five to 15 years older than their love interests.

In 35 per cent of all 400 movies, the male actor was older than their female love interest by at least ten years. In comparison, less than one per cent of female actors were older than their love interests.

Although trends show that men are more likely to the older partners in a marriage, Hollywood age gaps do not reflect reality.

The average age difference between husbands and wives has been approximately two and a half years since the 1970s in England and Wales.

The analysis of actors' careers found that in 53 per cent of Hollywood movies, male actors are six or more years older than their counterparts.

It doesn't quite add up, does it?
