President Donald Trump travelled to France to participate in a number of events and ceremonies to pay respect to US marines killed in WWI.

Trump was due to travel to the French village of Belleau, 50 miles east of Paris, to visit the 2,888 Americans buried in the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery.

The US president skipped out on the visit. An initial statement provided by the White House claimed the trip "has been cancelled due to scheduling and logistical difficulties caused by the weather".

People online were not happy with the flimsy excuse.

Many were confused by what they meant by "logistical difficulties caused by the weather…"

According to online weather forecasts, Saturday had “light rain and low clouds".

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders later updated the explanation and in a statement on Sunday said the weather and “near-zero visibility”, and added that traffic concerns prevented the president from travelling by car.

President Trump did not want to cause that kind of unexpected disruption to the city and its people.

Twitter enacted an unofficial public roast, and users dragged the US president for being unable to use an umbrella…

And rehashed the awkward moments Trump has had with umbrellas.

They didn't pull any punches
