Trump's Supreme Court pick caught on video refusing to shake hands with the dad of a slain Parkland teen

Footage of Donald Trump’s Supreme Court nominee refusing to shake hands with the father of Parkland victim Jaime Guttenberg has gone viral.

Fred Guttenberg, whose daughter Jaime was killed in the Parkland massacre, held out his hand to Brett Kavanaugh, and the judge looked at him, then turned away without saying anything before walking out.

Video footage of the interaction clearly shows Guttenberg holding his hand out in the form of a handshake, and Kavanaugh looks at him for a few seconds before turning away.

Guttenberg took to twitter to reveal the interaction, writing:

Just walked up to judge Kavanaugh as morning session ended. Put out my hand to introduce himself as Jaime Guttenberg’s dad. He pulled his hand back, turned his back to me and walked away. I guess he did not want to deal with the reality of gun violence.

He added that he was "invited by senator Feinstein to attend".

Anyone who knows me knows I will talk to anyone. I initiated an effort to introduce myself to Kavanaugh. It was my decision [sic] and I own it.

In a statement after the incident, a White House spokesperson said an "unidentified individual" had approached the judge as he was leaving for the confirmation hearing’s lunch break, and that "before the judge was able to shake his hand, security had intervened".

However, Guttenberg insists that the way the White House framed the event is "incorrect".

Incorrect. I was here all day and introduced by Senator Feinstein. No security involved. He turned and walked away.

Hilary Clinton's daughter Chelsea was one of the first people to react to the video, and wrote on Twitter:

I am so very, very sorry Fred this happened.

The co-founder of March Four Our Lives expressed his shock.

Kavanaugh’s nomination has been backed by the National Rifle Association, who are pledging $1million to his campaign, on the grounds that his "confirmation to the US Supreme Court because he will protect our constitutional right to keep and bear arms".
