While Trump is in the UK, let's remember the time Boris Johnson said he was 'out of his mind'

Donald Trump will meet Theresa May later for a two-day working visit – the first since his election in 2016.

The US president comes ahead of May publishing a White Paper setting out a blueprint for the UK’s relationship with the EU. Trump doesn’t appear to have much confidence in the UK calling it in ‘turmoil’.

Trump will also meet with the Queen and has expressed interest in meeting with Boris Johnson, who was replaced as foreign secretary by Jeremy Hunt after he resigned over Brexit negotiations.

Woody Johnson, the US ambassador to the UK, suggested Trump could meet him, and said the former foreign secretary ‘has been a friend of the president’.

However in 2015, as Mayor of London Johnson said Trump was ‘clearly out of his mind’ when then presidential candidate called for a ‘total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States'.

He told ODN:

Donald Trump is clearly out of his mind of he thinks that’s a sensible way to proceed. You can’t ban people going to the United States in that way or indeed to any country.

When Donald Trump says there are parts of London that are ‘no-go’ areas I think he’s betraying a quite stupefying ignorance that makes him frankly unfit to hold the office of president of the United States.

I would invite him to see the whole of London and take him around the city except that I wouldn’t want to expose Londoners to any unnecessary risk of meeting Donald Trump.

Mass protests are planned in London when Trump arrives, and a giant Trump baby blimp is set to fly over the city in protest.
