A woman from New York tried and failed to sue her 12-year-old nephew over a hug that broke her wrist

Update: The case has been thrown out. The jury took just 25 minutes on Tuesday to decide not to award Jennifer Connell a penny of the $127,000 in damages she was seeking.

A New Yorker is suing her 12-year-old nephew for giving her a hug that broke her wrist.

Jennifer Connell, a 54-year-old human resources manager from the Upper East Side, told a courtroom in Bridgeport, Connecticut that she visited her nephew Sean Tarala's family home in the state for his eighth birthday party in 2011.

He was so excited to see her he ran across the room to give her a hug.

All of a sudden he was there in the air, I had to catch him and we tumbled onto the ground. I remember him shouting, ‘Auntie Jen I love you,’ and there he was flying at me.

Connell said that she hadn't let on at the time she was hurt so as not to spoil the party, but testified that life has been difficult since she sustained her injury, which is why she is now suing the 12-year-old for £83,000 for his “negligent” and “careless” affection.

I live in Manhattan in a third-floor walk-up so it has been very difficult... And we all know how crowded it is in Manhattan.

I was at a party recently, and it was difficult to hold my hors d’oeuvre plate.

Local news reports that Sean, whose mother died last year, looked confused as he sat in the courtroom on Friday with his father Michael.

The internet outrage machine has pointed out that Connell might be suing because of insurance disputes between her insurer and Michael's, which means the companies may have had to take the case to court for a legal settlement.

Still, though. Surely it's nothing a hug couldn't sort out?
