A Republican senator has been ridiculed after he suggested US president Donald Trump’s legacy will be peace in the Middle East – all while war rages in Iran.
Indiana senator Jim Banks sparked major controversy after he suggested that Trump will be remembered for bringing “peace to the Middle East”.
Banks made the remarks as he appeared on Fox Business and suggested that Trump will ensure Iran will never have a weapon. Meanwhile, the war with Iran continues to rumble on six months after Trump started it, with no clear resolution on the horizon.
Banks claimed: “President Trump's legacy is going to be that he was the president who brought peace to the Middle East and to the whole wide world by ensuring Iran will never have a nuclear weapon. We can be grateful and proud of that.”
Given that Trump has suggested on several occasions the US has won the war with no evidence, and 18 US service members and thousands more in the Middle East have been killed in the conflict, Banks’ claim was quickly refuted.
“Is Jim Banks dumb enough to actually believe this?” someone asked.
Another critic labelled Banks, “delusional”.
Someone else said: “It’s insane that we live in a world a sitting senator, in the middle of a war in the Middle East that the President started, can go on TV and say with a straight face that he is the president ‘who brought peace to the Middle East.’
“George Orwell is turning in his grave.”
One person commented: “Delusions are strong with this one.”
Another said: “I'm fairly certain that’s not going to be Trump’s legacy.”
“Slurp,” another mocked.
