Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has fired back at Ivanka Trump after controversial comments the daughter of the US president made about people in America not wanting to be given the living wage.
In an interview on Fox News, Trump was asked about Ocasio-Cortez’ Green New Deal proposal, which seeks to guarantee jobs for all Americans on a federal level.
The daughter of Donald Trump replied to the deal’s plan to give Americans jobs, saying: “I don’t think most Americans in their heart want to be given something.”
She continued: “I’ve spent a lot of time travelling around this country over the last four years."
People want to work for what they get, so I think this idea of a guaranteed minimum is not something most people want. They want the ability to be able to secure a job. They want the ability to live in a country where there’s the potential for upward mobility.
Ocasio-Cortez responded to her comments with her typical fiery rhetoric: “As a person who actually worked for tips & hourly wages in my life, instead of having to learn about it 2nd hand, I can tell you that most people want to be paid enough to live,’ she posted on Twitter.
A living wage isn’t a gift, it’s a right. Workers are often paid far less than the value they create.
Imagine attacking a Jobs Guarantee by saying ‘people prefer to earn money.’
Given the fact that Ivanka comes from an extremely privileged position, which has been criticised on a number of occasions given how present she is in American politics, people didn’t react well to her comments.
Earlier this week Donald Trump claimed, much to people's confusion, that his daughter created "millions of jobs" for Americans despite there being no proof that she has done so.
