As the youngest women to ever be elected to US congress and coming from a non-traditional background with socialist politics, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has been the target of many attacks from other politicians.

But while most of the criticism directed at her has tended to come from Republicans, this time it was it was another female Democrat who tried to throw shade at Ocasio-Cortez.

The outgoing Democrat senator for Missouri Claire McCaskill called the youngest female congresswoman a “thing” and “shiny object” in an exit interview with CNN.

Asked whether she would consider Ocasio-Cortez a “crazy Democrat”, she said:

I'm a little confused why she's the thing. But it's a good example of what I'm talking about, a bright shiny new object, came out of nowhere and surprised people when she beat a very experienced congressman.

And so she's now talked about a lot. I'm not sure what she's done yet to generate that kind of enthusiasm, but I wish her well. I hope she hangs the moon.”

It wasn't long before Ocasio-Cortez addressed McCaskill’s comments on Twitter, expressing disappointment at being called a "thing" and calling out her choice to compromise with the Trump administration.

McCaskill replied to say she meant her well wishes towards Ocasio-Cortez, and had no ill intentions.

As you would expect. Ocasio-Cortez’s followers had her back.

It’s probably safe to say that despite her critics, Ocasio-Cortez isn’t about to back down anytime soon
