Eating lots of cheese could actually be the key to a healthy life.
In a study that has been widely welcomed, researchers from the University of Copenhagen found that eating cheese is good for our hearts.
They asked 139 adults to take part in a 12-week cheese-eating study, with a third of the group eating 80g of regular, high-fat cheese, and another third eating 80g of low-fat cheese every day.
The last group didn’t get to eat any cheese at all, instead eating 90g of bread and jam.
Surprisingly, researchers found that the group eating high-fat cheese had no change in their LDL cholesterol, their waist size, or their blood pressure. In fact, their health had actually improved.
Their study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, reported that while nobody saw a change in their ‘bad’ LDL cholesterol levels, the high-fat cheese eating group experienced an increase in their levels of ‘good’ HDL cholesterol.
They added that including cheese in a healthy diet could actually protect against cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, thanks to the increase in ‘good’ cholesterol.
