A woman on social media has gone viral after calling out the hypocrisy of gestures like the “Clap for Carers” campaign when NHS staff are underfunded, understaffed and overworked.

Twitter user @redsarah99 posted a video on Thursday to slam the “criminally incompetent government” that she said had failed to provide adequate PPE to protect NHS staff.

She also called out people who voted for the Conservative Party in the last general election but who also participated in the “Clap for Carers” campaign as “brain-dead seals”:

Nurses cannot feed themselves [and] claps do not feed nurses. Claps do not provide PPE that stops them catching a disease.

The video has racked up almost two million views on Twitter alone:

Many people responded to the video with praise for its important message:

The "Clap for Carers" campaign started in March and ran every Thursday evening for a total of 10 weeks.

It was brought back on Sunday for one final time to mark 72 years since the NHS was created.

Boris Johnson stepped out of No 10 on Sunday to participate in the initiative, despite saying on Friday that he doesn’t “believe in gestures” when asked about taking the knee in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement.
