Newcastle has been named as the city with the worst vermin problem in the UK, according to a new report.

The British Pest Control Association reports that 5 per cent of all households in the city have dealt with extermination of the likes of cockroaches, rats, mice, bed bugs and wasps compared to just 0.03 per cent in Southend - the least-infested place.

Here are the most infested towns across the country ranked in order of call-outs per 1,000 people:

1. Newcastle-upon-Tyne - 50.42

2. Corporation of the City of London - 49.76

3. Knowsley Metropolitan Borough Council - 34.34

4. Southwark, London Borough of – 32.34

5. North Lanarkshire Council – 31.82

6. Middlesbrough Borough Council – 27.26

7. South Tyneside Metropolitan Borough Council – 26.75

8. Sunderland City Council – 26.34

9. Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council – 26.26

10. Clackmannanshire Council – 23.70

11. Rhondda-Cynon-Taff Council – 23.47

12. Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council – 22.92
