Last night's episode saw Jon Snow, played by Kit Harington and one of (if not the) popular characters on the show, repeatedly knifed by his supposedly sworn Night's Watch brothers.

Author George RR Martin, whose A Song of Ice and Fire books the HBO show is based on, has a famous penchant for killing off major characters, especially ones people like, but even this might have been a step too far.
