Jeremy Corbyn says he can't meet the Queen because he is 'too busy'

Jeremy Corbyn has said 'thanks but no thanks' to being made a member of the privy council in person by the Queen, citing prior engagements.

Being a member of the mostly ceremonial body gives access to higher class security information and briefings. It's possible to join without meeting with the monarch in person, but traditionally political party leaders usually do so.

The news seems to have taken some people by surprise despite the fact the Labour leader is an avowed republican and has previously stated he would need to think about whether he would attend the ceremony, which involves kneeling in front of the Queen.

Corbyn's office hasn't said what "prior engagement" will keep him from attending, which has led to some, er, speculation.

Corbyn ruffled feathers last month by not singing the national anthem at a memorial service for commemorating the Battle of Britain (and for not having his top button done up):

At the end of the day, let's keep this in perspective, shall we?
