Police shoot knife-wielding man dead in north London

Police have shot dead a man who was threatening a woman with a knife at a house in London.

A number of shots were fired during the incident at Shepperton Road in Islington at around 1am and the 40-year-old died 20 minutes later while on route to the hospital, Scotland Yard said.

Police had sent a negotiator to the scene at 11.19pm yesterday following reports the man had broken into a house.

The man and woman involved are believed to have known each other, police said. The woman was not harmed but is being treated for shock.

The Metropolitan Police said in a statement: "As in any shooting, officers from the Met's Directorate of Professional Standards (DPS) have been informed and this incident has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC)."

The death was the first fatal shooting by police in England and Wales for two and a half years.
